I had to hunt down Gabriel to get his keys, then grab Matteo, and we were off.

It didn’t take long to catch up with her. She wasn’t going fast. It’s not like she was speeding away from me. She was just driving. She just needed the escape. I could feel it through the vehicles.

But, yet again, she didn’t listen. She’s such a fucking pain in my ass.

And she wouldn’t pull over, no matter how furious I lashed my scowl her way, she refused to pull over.

And now, I watch smoke plume from the hood of the car, which is now nothing but pieces of metal strewn across the empty street. Trees surround us in every direction, and I swear my body feels like it was in that car itself. My muscles are screaming, my stomach twisted, my bones so tense I feel they are moments from cracking.

Matteo speeds up to the crash site, the cracking of metal running beneath the car as we drive down the street. I don’t wait until he’s stopped. I just open the door, leaping from the moving vehicle as I sprint to her.

“Raven!” I roar, getting on my knees. Her hair splays like a curtain around her face. There’s a gash along her cheek, the blood trickling from the wound and into her eyebrow, painting it a dark red. Her arms hang above her, the seat belt digging into her neck and chest.

Her eyes closed.

Her mouth slack.

“Raven!” I shout, shaking her, panic building in my chest. It smells like gas and burning rubber, and my knees dig into the broken glass from her window.

When I hear the running of gas, I lean back, seeing it pouring from the back of the car.

“Fuck. Raven!” I turn over my shoulder, seeing Matteo sprinting toward me. “Matteo! Fucking call someone!”

He nods, his face ghostly white as he turns around and races back toward his car.

I lean over, not being gentle in the slightest as my hand reaches for the seat belt clip. I hold on to her, pressing the button as her limp body falls into my arms. I let out a groan, my entire body shaking in absolute terror for the first time in my life.

Legitimate fear, raw in its form, rips through me, and I can’t stop the roar that rips from my throat. It echoes in the woods. I pull her from the broken window, my fingers gripping her tightly as I lift her from the rubble.

“Raven. Raven. Raven. Raven!” I say her name over and over again, a chant, a prayer, a whisper, a fucking spell to get her to wake up.

The sound of a pop makes my body freeze, and I see a spark along the edge of the car.

I bolt.

Hefting her into my arms, I run as quickly as I can away from the car. I head to the side of Gabriel’s, laying her down on the ground. Wrapping my fingers around her throat, I squeeze and close my eyes.

Thump, thump, thump.

My eyes pop open, staring at her.
